Can do, need to
Metacognition is the awareness and understanding of our own learning, ability and thought-processes, and is an essential part of a students’ learning journey at Summerhill. Supported by feedback, students are encouraged to reflect on themselves as learners and ask two key questions: ‘What can I do well?’ and ‘What do I need to do to improve?’ We call this ‘Can do, need to’ and believe that the greater a students’ ability to answer the questions, the greater their potential for progress.
